Integrative Therapy
From Dr. Michele Iemolo
Albuquerque, New Mexico
Embodied Heart Space offers a personalized, whole-person approach for neurodivergent and neurotypical children and adults that honors all of who you are—mind, body, emotions, and spirit. Rather than using a one-size-fits-all method, Dr. Michele draws from a variety of healing practices to create a wellness plan designed specifically for you and your unique needs. This might include body-based therapies like somatic work or dance/movement therapy, sound healing, traditional talk therapy, cognitive/behavioral strategies, or a combination of approaches that feels right for you. Whether you’re navigating autism, ADHD, anxiety, or other life challenges—at any age—this whole-person approach recognizes that true healing happens when we address not just what’s happening in our minds, but also what we’re experiencing in our bodies and hearts. You’ll be met where you are and supported in the way that makes the most sense for your journey.

Dance / Movement Therapy
Dance/movement therapy (DMT), according to the American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA), is the “psychotherapeutic use of dance, movement, body awareness, and embodied communicaiton, to foster healing and wellness for all individuals, families and communities”. DMT uses body movement as a powerful tool for healing and growth. Rather than just talking about feelings, this approach helps you express and process emotions through movement—whether that’s gentle stretching, expressive gestures, or full-body dance. It recognizes that our bodies hold emotions, memories, and wisdom, and that moving can help us access feelings that are sometimes hard to put into words. It’s especially helpful for learning to recognize what you’re feeling in your body, manage those feelings in healthy ways, and express yourself more fully. No dance experience is needed—this is about your authentic movement, not performance.
What are the possible benefits of dance/movement therapy?
- Movement as a path to healing: Dance/movement therapy (DMT) uses your body’s natural wisdom and expressive movement to help you explore, understand, and work through emotions that might be difficult to put into words.
- Your body speaks too: This approach honors that communication happens through more than just words. Your gestures, posture, breathing, and movements all carry meaning and can express what’s happening inside you, sometimes more truthfully than language alone.
- Building a positive relationship with yourself: Through supportive movement experiences in a safe therapeutic relationship, you can develop greater self-awareness, learn to regulate your emotions, and build a more compassionate view of yourself.
- Addressing trauma where it lives: Because trauma is stored in the body, not just the mind, this approach helps you heal from the ground up by first finding safety and trust in your own body—the essential foundation for lasting change.
- Real-world benefits: Research shows that DMT can help you feel more connected to others, lift your mood, ease anxiety, and express yourself more authentically—all while honoring that your body’s language is just as meaningful as your words.
What does a dance/movement therapist do?
A dance/movement therapist pays close attention to how you move and uses movement and dance expression as the primary tool for both understanding what you’re experiencing and helping you heal. They’re trained to notice what your body is communicating—perhaps tension in your shoulders, the way you hold yourself, or how freely (or hesitantly) you move through space. Through guided movement experiences, Dr. Michele helps you to express feelings that might be stuck or hard to say out loud, and create bridges between what your body is feeling/sensing and what you can eventually put into words. The goal is to help you discover new ways of moving and being that feel more authentic, expansive, and true to who you are. Dance/movement therapists believe that dance is not merely a form of exercise or entertainment; it is inherently healing.
What occurs in a dance/movement therapy session?
Dance/movement therapy sessions can happen one-on-one or in a group setting, depending on what works best for you. Each session is designed around your comfort level, interests, and goals. As a trained DJ, Dr. Michele might use recorded music to support your process as well as props like scarves or balls, or simply silence to invite movement and self-expression. You might explore different styles of movement—from gentle swaying or stretching to more expressive dance—whatever feels right for you in the moment. Sessions can include improvised movement where you follow what your body wants to do, relaxation and breathing exercises, creative expression, talking about what you’re experiencing, or even using movement and dance to explore different scenarios or feelings. There’s no “right” way to move, and you’re never asked to perform or do anything that doesn’t feel safe. The focus is on discovering what your body needs to express and how movement can support your healing and growth.
Does someone need to have dance experience in order to participate and benefit from dance/movement therapy?
No prior dance experience is required in order to participate or benefit from dance/movement therapy. It is designed for all levels of physical ability/mobility and focuses on using movement for expression, not performance.
Sound Healing/Sound Therapy
Both sound healing and sound therapy are practices that use sound vibrations to promote physical and mental well-being. Both also recognize that sound doesn’t just affect our ears—it resonates throughout our entire body, helping to reduce stress, calm the nervous system, and promote a sense of balance and relaxation.
What is sound healing?
Sound healing is an ancient practice that uses soothing sounds and vibrations from the human voice (like chanting or humming) or instruments (like singing bowls, gongs, or drums).
What is sound therapy?
Sound therapy takes a more structured, clinical approach, using specific sound frequencies in a therapeutic setting, often alongside other healing practices like guided meditation, visualization, or body-based techniques.
Breathwork and Meditation
Breathwork and meditation are simple yet powerful practices that can help you feel more calm, centered, and present in your life. Breathwork involves intentionally changing how you breathe—whether that’s slowing it down, deepening it, or using specific breathing patterns to help calm your nervous system, release tension, and shift your emotional state. Meditation is a practice of focusing your attention, whether on your breath, a word or phrase, body sensations, movement, or simply observing your thoughts without judgment. Both practices help you develop a stronger connection between your mind and body, reduce stress and anxiety, improve your mood, and create more space to respond thoughtfully rather than react automatically to life’s challenges. No special equipment or experience is needed, just a willingness to pause and tune inward.
What breathwork techniques are used at Embodied Heart Space?
While breathwork has gained popularity, it is not new. People have been practicing breathwork for thousands of years, and it has its roots in yoga practice. Currently, there is a wide variety of breathing techniques and breathing methods. At Embodied Heart Space, Dr. Michele uses mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) breathing techniques and The Soma+IQ™ method. Dr. Michele is a certified Soma+IQ™ practitioner. Soma+IQ™ is a type of breathwork that uses circular, connected breathing and rhythmic music to support you in regulating your nervous system and to release stored emotional stress, trauma, and old patterns from the body. Soma+IQ™ is accredited by Arizona State University.
