ABA Therapy: Behavioral Consultation

By Dr. Michele Iemolo
Albuquerque, New Mexico

Embodied Heart Space provides behavioral consultation services for parents/caregivers, other providers and/or school staff. It’s an opportunity to receive expert guidance and support as well as education about applied behavior analysis (ABA) principles and strategies. Dr. Michele, who is a board-certified behavior analyst (BCBA), will assess your child’s behaviors, strengths, and challenges (particularly for autism related concerns and other neurodevelopmental conditions), then helps you to understand evidence-based approaches that can be used at home, school or in daily life. Through this consultation process, you’ll learn practical techniques to support skill development and address challenging behaviors. This service is designed to empower you with knowledge so you can either implement strategies yourself in everyday situations or become a more informed advocate when selecting and working with an ABA therapist or program for your child.

Dr. Michele does not provide direct ABA therapy with children. Rather, behavioral consultation is a collaborative partnership focused on equipping families, other caregivers and providers with the tools and understanding they need to best support their child.

Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) and Behavioral Consultation

At Embodied Heart Space, Dr. Michele is a board-certified behavior analyst (BCBA), that utilizes a combination of naturalistic and developmental approaches from the fields of psychology and the behavioral sciences to develop positive behavioral supports and/or behavioral intervention plans for children and their families. Additionally, Dr. Iemolo is a certified Project ImPACT (Improving Parents as Communication Partners) provider. Project ImPACT is an evidence-based, parent-mediated intervention for young children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and social communication delays, teaching parents strategies to boost their child’s communication, social skills, imitation, and play during daily routines, supported by research and ABA principles.

Key benefits of behavioral consultation

  • Empowers families with knowledge and strategies for their child’s needs.
  • Improves focus, communication, social skills, and daily living skills.
  • Provides expert guidance for unique challenges, particularly with autism or other neurodevelopmental conditions.
  • Addresses specific issues rather than broad concerns, often through “problem-centered consultation”.

Is Behavioral Consultation Only for Autism?

No. While behavioral interventions and consultation services are commonly used to address challenges or differences in children with autism, they can be beneficial for a wide range of neurodevelopmental conditions, including intellectual delays, as well as behavioral conditions like ADHD. The goal of behavioral consultation is to: address the specific needs of children and their families; develop intervention strategies and plans based on data; and teach/empower parents/caregivers to implement strategies and support skill generalization at home and in the community.
